NEW REQUIREMENT FOR FIRSTTIME WASHINGTON DRIVERS UNDER 25 Starting November 1, 2026, first-time Washington driver license applicants under the age of 25 must pass a free online-only course for work zone andfirst responder safety to get their license. The free course will be available to everyone starting September 1. COURSE OVERVIEW Key features of a roadside emergency or work zone are orange safety cones, speed reduction signs, and flashing lights. The course covers how to navigate these zones and avoid risky last-minute decisions. The steps to take the course are on DOL’s work zone and first responder webpage. https://dol.wa.gov/wzfr. A new mandatory training for younger drivers aims to reduce collisions with emergency and first responders on the roadside. To enroll in the driver's ed course, please bring your Washington State ID or your instruction permit number, as required by the Department of Licensing.

To obtain your instruction permit number, click the link below. You must have a permit number before you sign up. If you have a WA State ID, you do not need to create a permit number; your state ID number is your permit number. You can get your actual learner's permit 10 days before the course starts.
